Inis Oírr

Inis Oírr

Inis Oírr is the smallest of the three Aran Islands, the others being Inis Mór, and Inis Meáin.   This beautiful island is the closest to Doolin and has a population of approximately 270.  Walking or cycling is the best way of seeing the island which has wonderful sites such as the medieval O’Brien castle built in an ancient stone fort, Cnoc Raithní - a bronze age mound, various church ruins, a lake, a healing well, a lighthouse and a shipwreck.  The cargo vessel Plassey was shipwrecked off Inis Oírr in 1960.  The islanders rescued the entire crew from the stricken vessel using a breeches buoy - an event captured in a pictorial display at the island Arts Centre - also well worth a visit.
